Meet the Owner

Picture
Hi there!  My name is Jenny Charles and I am the owner of Rose Reeds.  I work as a band director and oboe teacher in the Chicagoland area and hold degrees and certificates from the Chicago College of Performing Arts and Northern Illinois University School of Music.

I have been selling my oboe reeds to my and other local band students for years because they produce a more stable and consistent tone than the machine made and store bought reeds can. Many beginning oboe students can get very discouraged when starting because their reeds are hard to play on and their tone is so bright and loud they stick out of the ensemble.

in 2013 I began selling my reeds on Etsy, eBay, and other online retailers.
On Etsy I have been the number one reed seller for over a year and this is greatly due to my reeds consistency and quick turn around times!

How we make our reeds

My first priority in reed making is to make a reed responsive and easy to play on, even in my professional level reeds. Secondly I make them play in tune. Once both of these elements are achieved, an excellent reed with a wonderful rich and warm tone is born!!

I also differentiate my reeds for beginners, intermediate, and advance/professional level reeds. All level reeds are hand crafted and of high quality. The beginner reed has a slightly thicker tip since many beginning oboe students are prone to breaking reeds in their early years. The intermediate reeds have thinner tips and slightly more resistance to produce a more mature tone. The professional reeds are the same reeds that I play on myself. These reeds are made with higher quality staple, are made with more resistance, and have a more resonant professional tone.

Why our reeds are different

My reeds are unique because I am a band director. I have seen what works and what doesn't with beginning oboe students and advanced students. The band program at my school is very large, with our beginning band always topping 100 students. Even though I make reeds, I certainly don't have time to fiddle with them everyday so that my students can play. Once I make a reed, I ensure that it is complete and ready to play!
